Local vs foreigner for same job in today employment market.?
The Singapore economy is now confirmed to be in a recession. DBS an iron rice bowl employer had retrenched 900 employees, many in senior positions including managing directors who have service the company for one to two decades.

Likewise we also read in papers that the headhunters are now swamped with resumes from retrenched bankers in US and Europer keen to escape the collapsing economy for a safer heaven in Asia.

The big question is our local employees are already having a difficult time seeking for another job after retrenchment. If the local is equally qualified to do the job for the same or lower pay, why is the foreigners allow into our weak job market to competite with Singaporeans.

It is well and good if foreigners are hired for positions not wanted by lcoal or for special skill which local does not poss eg casino. But many a time the foreigners hired are actually doing jobs which local are equally qualified and available.

A case in point is the Finance, in the hotel industry for example, particularly chain hotel group like the InterContinental, the head of the Finance or IT is always a foreigners from either India, Philipinnes or Poland. All the Holiday Inn and InterContinental hotels in Singapore are manned by foreigners. Locals are shunned for some reasons by this chain.

In this weak job market, UK for example restricted employment pass to only industry where local is insufficient to fill the post. Likewise the same restriction goes for USA and Europe. But in the local context, in the spirit of so called free trade, our local are robbed of the job opportunities by foreigners whilst their appication for similar position in UK, USA and Europe are in vain as these respective govt known that citizens should come first.

Should our government also comes on board to protect its own citizens or at least ensure that the rules of the games is fair.

I am not sure where you received your information about the US, but last I know in a free market, an employer is allowed to hire anyone legal to work in the country and is qualified for the job. there is no restriction on if this person is local or not. the company might hire locally only because they want to or because the locals are the only ones applying for the job. You may want to do some more research into this.

Many foreigners are employed in Singapore. Most of them are willing to work at a lesser pay than Singaporeans and also note that most of them are unable to be employed in their own countries.

I am not talking about maids and so forth. Even in the construction industry skilled worker levels you can see many foreigners. What talk about ITE graduates and so forth.

Look at the nursing profession the number of foreigners is shocking and all of these foreigners will leave after 3 to 5 years of obtaining a Singapore PR. Most go to the US with their nursing knowledge. The list of employment nature is not exhaustive.

With the current economic downturn the government needs to look at stemming the influx of foreigners and make more jobs available to Singaporeans. Here our Singaporeans must not shirk from their responsibilities and so forth but at the ability to meet their responsibilities to their family.

All these foreigners are here because

You have raise a valid point, in today very bad job market priority should be for local first. I am not referring to jobs or positions shunned by local example maid, cleaner or the construction workers. What is alarming is professional like bankers , accountant , legal advisers who have lost jobs due to retrenchments. This category of unemployed local if they are willing to do the same job and for the same pay, the govt should now take care of them and make sure that foreigner do not deprive them of this opportunity.

We have heard lower end of society complaining about cleaners depriving them of jobs. Unemployed professional are now in same situation due to free markets where foreigners are depriving us of same jobs when there is insufficient to goes round the local.

Care and concern must begin at home and for local first.
