The Witch of Wildlands

The Witch of Wildlands is my final degree piece, and the result of two years of study and research for a Masters of Arts degree in Visual Communication at Birmingham’s Institute of Art & Design.

I wrote the poem during the Christmas holidays in 2006, and have been working on the visual presentation of the story since then. I explored many avenues for the treatment of this final piece of visual communication including watercolours, acrylics, puppetry, clay animation, illustrated books, infrared and UV photography and video, digital illustration and motion graphics.

The final piece was created using elements from all of the research and resulting visuals I produced during postgraduate study. The animation was created using Adobe Production Suite CS3. This is my first animation and has been an exercise in Art Direction, from concept through to release and promotion.

The film is intended to be an introduction to the world I have created, The Wildlands. I also have other story ideas set in this world, that I intend to develop further after my postgraduate studies are completed in September 2008.

The audio for the piece was composed by Dave Williams, an established musical theatre composer. The piece was narrated by actress and singer Dee Lloyd, with The Witch’s voice provided by myself.
