I am an American citizen with an Australian citizen fiancee. We got engaged in America and I came to Sydney on a 2 year international Postgraduate Research visa. I want to apply for permanent residency, then receive automatic citizenship through our marriage, which will take place in July in NSW. How do I do this? I have checked immi.gov.au and citizenship.gov.au, but I can’t find anything on applying for permanent residency. Supposedly if I voluntarily apply for citizenship (instead of receiving it automatically through marriage), I could lose my American citizenship. Anyone have any insight on how to apply for permanent residency?
helo pilot: taking vows doesn’t null & void my american citizenship. I wouldn’t give up american citizenship, I would either get australian permanent residency or get dual citizenship.

There is no automatic citizenship in Australia unless you were born there (and there are rules on that as well).

Australia does not have automatic citizenship via marriage. You still have to live in the country for it. They got rid of it in the late 40’s. Please for the sake of my sanity update your misguided viewpoints.

You actually have to hold PR for at least 1 year and lived in Australia for 3 years beofre that before you qualify. If you apply for citizenship without holding PR you will not be approved.

You can hold both American and Australian citizenship at the same time.
