Chief of Defence Staff General Sarath Fonseka has said that the credit for the victory over terrorism should go to the Government headed by the President. He participated as the Chief Guest at a forum organised by the Alumni ociation of the Post Graduate Institute of Management at the Hilton Hotel recently.
During a panel discussion, his opinion was sought with regard to media reports on the success of the war. In response, he said it was teamwork. There is no question about it. There were different players. Different people contributed like players of a cricket team. But, to be very sincere, genuine and frank about it, the General pointed out that a war cannot be won sans political leadership. Going to war was a political requirement. Remaining in the war and seeing an end to the war is a political achievement. The credit should go to the Head of State and the politicians. He emphasized that the Defence Secretary and the Defence Ministry were behind them and they were supported by permitting them to continue the war as they wanted.
